Telemetry Solutions solar products may be built to operate in one of two different ways. One choice is for the solar panels to generate electricity which is then stored for the GPS. After enough electrical current for one position attempt has been generated and stored the GPS will attempt to acquire its position. However, with the addition of the UHF bi-directional wireless communication option the GPS data logger will look for your base station signal prior to using that electrical current for a GPS position. Then if your base station signal is detected a handshake is established between the GPS data logger and the base station. At this point the GPS data logger will not attempt a GPS position but rather will allow you to instantaneously recover GPS data stored in the data logger. And that data is retained in the data logger until you recover it and erase the memory.
The other way that our solar GPS tracking products work is for the solar panel to charge a battery and acquire GPS positions on a schedule that you create and install in the device prior to deployment. Because of this battery the GPS can work for very long periods of shade or darkness.
