With so many different kinds of turtles and tortoises there is not a one size fits all GPS tracking solution available but that's ok because we are going to design a GPS tracking system for your specific needs.
This is accomplished by first establishing the maximum weight that can be mounted onto the species you study and then determining which electronic package to begin with. After that we custom fit a battery into your package design so that we just bump up against your maximum weight. In this way we can maximize battery life without putting an undue burden on the animal.

First, the FLR V. By comparison this product is less expensive and has more options but the remote data download range is shorter than the 4000E product line. However FLR V data are automatically downloaded to a waterproof base station. You can either track the animal and take the base station into the field to obtain the data download or if you know where the study animals are going to be you can just leave the base station in the field. It will operate 24 hours per day for 5 days before needing a battery recharge. Any data logger that comes into range with the base station will automatically transfer the GPS data from the data logger over to the base station. The base station can hold millions of lines of GPS data, no need to worry about the memory filling up. Until erased by you, GPS data are always retained in the data logger regardless of whether or not it has been downloaded.
The FLR V can be equipped with a water switch that performs two functions. It will record water presence/absence information and store that in the data output and it will also detect water presence/absence in order to inform the GPS data logger schedule. The GPS antenna will not be able to receive signals under water so it is important to know if it is under water at the time the GPS is scheduled to turn on.
The other product line is the 4000E GPS data logger. It can also use a water switch although water presence/absence data will not be stored in the data file, the water switch will only inform the microprocessor about the presence of water and modify the GPS schedule if water is present.
The 4000E has a much greater remote download range than the FLR V but the download is not automated at all, you will need to be in the field with a laptop in order to obtain a data download. The 4000E has slightly less battery life and greater weight than the FLR V.
