GPS for California Condor

Solar Patagial GPS for California Condor

With remote and automatic data download options

Because the California Condor is restricted to primarily gliding and weighs an astonishing 13kg, the weight of an avian GPS tracking device is extremely important. As a result, Telemetry Solutions has made an exceptionally lightweight and low profile solar powered patagial GPS tag that weighs 47grams. The weight of our bird GPS data logger will not compromise the flight and hunting patterns of the California Condor which in return will give better and more accurate results.

Our GPS devices for birds offer an array of options for you to choose from such as an activity data logger, automatic and remote data download. We test all of our patagial GPS tags in an environmental chamber to ensure reliability in the field. These units are put under punishing temperature ranges from -40C. to 40C. Any units with marginal performance are discarded.

Not only do we pride ourselves on our equipment, we believe that our staff is the best in the business. We have a knowledgeable sales team that will suggest the perfect patagial GPS data logger for you and we have a highly experienced customer support team that will assist you with the technical aspects of learning how to use the product after delivery. We will answer all of your inquiries within 1 business day.

Solar Patagial GPS for California Condor-How it works

As a Telemetry Solutions client, you will utilize our website to quickly download our user-friendly software. The software is your interface to create a GPS positioning schedule for your GPS data loggers. All of our products use simple USB connections that allow you to upload your schedule to the GPS unit. Your programming choices are almost limitless and there are three programming modes, repeat mode, template mode or always on mode. If during this process you need help we are here to support you every step of the way and we can even create your program and install it for you. Repeat mode is simple, you choose an interval at which your GPS data logger will turn on. Template mode enables you to program specific times and dates for positioning and this is very powerful, not restricting you to make every day look like every other day. Always on mode allows you to choose a time and date in the future at which the GPS module will turn on and stay on. These programming modes are yours at any time, our products are built so that you can use any of these modes. There is no need for you to decide upon one or another at the time you place your order.

Most of our seabird GPS modules are powered by a rechargeable battery. Charging is easily accomplished through the USB port by plugging the device into your computer or cell phone charger.

Your GPS module contains a memory that stores GPS data. You will recover the data either by capturing the bird and downloading data via USB cable or with the optional wireless data download option (range up to 500 meters). This option adds 1.5 grams to the overall weight of the product. The remote data download feature can be activated if you are within the download range of the Telemetry Solutions GPS module. And with the more convenient ‘automatic’ remote download option you don’t even have to leave the warmth of your shack for the data to be downloaded remotely. The Telemetry Solutions’ base station can trigger the automatic data download. Please click this link to watch a video describing the remote data download in more detail.

Downloaded data can be viewed in UTMs, degrees/minutes/seconds, decimal degrees or as a KML file that you can map directly to Google Earth. Another alternative is to upload your data to our secure website and view in Google Maps. This feature associates your map with a secure URL that can easily be shared.

Locate your birds by using the optional VHF transmitter that can be attached to the GPS module or attached elsewhere on the bird.
