Tracking Deer
Over the years, we’ve noticed a common scene in the offices of wildlife biologists—especially those working in deer management: a box on the floor filled with still-usable VHF collars. To make the most of this existing equipment, we developed a cost-effective solution that transforms a standard VHF collar into a GPS-enabled device in just minutes.
Called the GPS Pod, this add-on was first introduced in 2010 for caribou projects. It adds full GPS capability—along with long-range, automatic data download—while retaining the original VHF functionality, all without the need to replace the entire collar.

Small or Medium Pods
When you choose the GPS Pod, you gain access to a flexible, feature-rich system designed to adapt to your project’s needs. Data can be retrieved via automatic, remote download using long-range UHF to a base station, via Iridium satellite, or both, depending on your requirements.
Power options include either primary (non-rechargeable) batteries or solar-rechargeable batteries for extended field deployments. Additionally, the GPS Pod can be configured to communicate with external sensors—whether attached to the same animal, other animals in the study, or deployed in the environment to monitor conditions such as temperature or water levels.
